Fairfax, Va (11/6/10) - On Saturday November 6th, the Radford Highlanders traveled up to Fairfax, Virginia to play their in state rivals, The George Mason Patriots. With both teams eager for another victory, the game lived up to all expectations.
In the first quarter, Mason would draw first blood with a field goal from 30 yards out. Radford was quick to retaliate with a touch down pass to wide receiver Caleb Meeks. After Radford missed the extra point, the Highlanders were up 6 to 3.
In the second quarter, Mason would find the end zone for the first time with a 25 yard touch down pass to one of Mason’s wideouts. Despite successfully moving the ball up and down the field, neither team would score again in the quarter, leaving Mason up at the half 10 to 6.
In the second half, Radford received the ball but fumbled on the first play. After the dog pile cleared, the Patriots had recovered the ball, setting up Mason’s offense on the Radford 20. Quick to capitalize, the Patriots found the end zone again in just two plays, making the score 17 to 6. After falling behind by two scores, the Highlanders were determined to put themselves back in the game. Radford’s offense would score again late in the third quarter with a 35 yard touchdown pass to wide receiver John Webb. After making the extra point, the Highlanders were back in the game but still down 17 to 13.
Although the Highlanders remained resolute, their hopes of gaining the lead were stalled when Mason scored again in the 4th quarter, putting them up 24 to 13. It would not be until the last minutes of the game when Radford’s quarterback, Sean Monahan, threw a 45 yard pass to John Webb for the touchdown, making the score 24 to 19. With less than a minute left in regulation, Radford attempted an onside kick but the Patriots were quick to recover the ball. After kneeling the ball, Mason ran out the clock, giving them a second win in a row.
Next week George Mason will be looking for its third win in a row as they play the Southern Tech Wildcats at home in Fairfax, Va. The Radford Highlanders will be looking to bounce back as they play the USC Gamecocks for the SCCFA Championship this Sunday at Dublin Middle School. Kickoff is set at 2pm.
